Whenever I travel, I like to bring back something that will
remind me of the place. You have to balance getting something that is not only
representative of the place, not too cliche, something that is actually made in
the place, and is a reasonable price. So, I wanted to share three places in
India that are great places to shop for souvenirs complete with some tips and
tricks. </div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>1. Dilli Haat</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Dilli Haat is an open-air permanent market in South Delhi
where you can buy crafts and souvenirs that are representative of India and are
made by Indian craftsman. Dilli Hatt isn't an actual bazaar where the locals go
to shop - it is a tourist spot, and you do have to pay (20 rupees for an adult
and 10 rupees for children) and go through a security check to get in. But once
you are inside, you are free to check out all 62 stalls which are rented by
craftsmen for one to fifteen days which means that there will always be
something new. You can buy everything from purses to shoes to jewelry here. And
feel free to bargain and don't buy the first thing you see. Some shops have
similar looking items so walk around and look for the best deal! Dilli Haat
also has a food court ( I didn't go there, so I can't tell you if it's safe for
non-Indian stomachs!) and a stage for performances. It's a good place to get an
introduction to India.</div>

<b>2. Janpath Market</b></div>

If the idea of paying to get into a bazaar doesn't appeal to
you, you can always go to Janpath. Janpath can be considered a "real
market" - it's a road of shops and walking vendors who display their wares
on the ground. You can find many of the things you would find in Dilli Haat
among other things. And just as I said with Dilli Haat, don't buy the first
thing you see. If you walk a couple of feet down the road, you will find
someone selling something similar. And don't be afraid to bargain. A quick tip:
Get an idea of the range of prices that the item is selling for. Ask for a
deal, go back and forth with the vendor (usually the vendor won't come down to
your price) and then walk away. Most of the time, when the vendor realizes you
aren't that desperate for the item (even if you are!) they will quickly come
down to your price. That is because they know you can find something similar. However, it is important to remember that the quality can't always be confirmed and
promised. </div>

<b>3. Government Emporium</b></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
While it may be hard to verify the authenticity of items you
buy in markets, government Emporiums are government owned which means you can
be more confident about the quality of the crafts you buy. This, however, does
have some downsides. You can't bargain and the items tend to be pricey. I
myself have only been to one Emporium - the Cottage Emporium that was across
Janpath Market and didn't buy anything. Still, I think it's worth a visit
because it was like visiting an art museum. You can peruse through all of the
floors and get a glimpse of all the variety of Indian crafts in one place. If
you do end up going, I recommend hanging out where there are figures made out
of sandalwood - the smell is heavenly and artistry is amazing. </div>

This book is disturbing yet fascinating and beautifully
written. The story follows a memoir of a disgraced doctor by the name of Norton
Perina as he recounts his life's tales of the expedition to the island of a
lost tribe where he makes a fascinating medical discovery which lands him fame
at the expense of the tribe and the island. It has everything - an unreliable
narrator, accurate descriptions of medicine and anthropology, and tackles
everything from colonialism to the limits we should go for scientific
knowledge. This book will force you to think about morally gray areas and will
stay with you for a very long time.</div>

I don't know why I read this book since it's not in the
typical genre of books that I read. It probably has to do with reading some
really intense books and needing something lighter and the fact that I grew up
on fantasy books. The story begins when MacKayla Lane's sister is gruesomely
murdered in Ireland and sends her a disturbing and confusing voicemail.
MacKayla follows her to Ireland to find her sister's killer only to be drawn
into the secret world of Fae. I loved the world-building but the way one of the
characters treated her got too awful and irritating for me.</div>

I immediately loved the premise of this book so I am going
to start with that. The book follows Caire, a successful historical fiction
writer, as she is writing her new book about the failed Jacobite uprising of 1708.
When she is immediately drawn to the Slains castle in Scotland, she settles
into the nearby town and bases the main character from one of her own
ancestors. As she starts to write, she begins to realize that all of the
fiction that she has written is actual fact and starts to uncover secrets about
her ancestor's past. This is a gentle and light read which I thoroughly
enjoyed.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I am going to start off by saying yes, I know that this book
got a lot of criticism for being a book for privileged white women and yes
Sheryl Sandberg definitely started from a good place and has a lot of support.
Despite that, I still liked this book and think it made some encouraging and
valid points for women. Sheryl Sandberg, the current COO of facebook, offers her
and other women's tips on how to rise up to leadership positions through
stories and research all while stressing the importance of women rising to
leadership positions. It's not a roadmap to success, but she made some valid
points and discussed both the internal and external blocks that prevent women
from rising to the top.</div>

I loved <i>The Secret History</i> (you can read it's review <a href="http://facadesandnuances.blogspot.com/2015/05/its-time-for-april-2015-book-reviews.html" target="_blank">here</a>!) so I was expecting to like this book, and for the first few chapters I did. The book follows Theodore Decker, who survives a terrible event that kills his mother and ties him to a painting that links him to her. I do have to give it to Donna Tartt for telling a story about loss so poignantly and for weaving such beautiful sentences which may have been the main reason I kept reading it. I felt like I was wandering through it just like the main character is - that might have been the point. While it wraps up nicely at the end, I wasn't satisfied but relieved that the book had ended. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
During my recent visit to India, I really wanted to get a
book from an Indian female author and so after several recommendations I
decided to pick this one up. The book is a retelling of the epic Hindu story
the Mahabharata from the viewpoint of the Paanchali, one of the main female
characters in the saga. The Mahabharata is an ancient Sanskrit text, which
tells of the Kurukshetra war between the Kaurava and Pandava princes and is
filled with many other stories and texts, like the Bhagvid Gita, within it. I
know the general outline of the Mahabharata so I am not sure how much creative
license the author took but from what I have heard, she didn't change much. And
the one thing she did change, which was the secret feelings for someone else, I
really didn't like and found it unnecessary. Other than that, I found her take
of the females of the story to be refreshing and interesting. In terms of plot,
the story follows the general outline of the Mahabharata, which is fascinating
on its own, but it does jump ahead occasionally since the Mahabharata is so
long. </div>

<li>Jump rings</li>

<br />
<span lang="">Traveling allows us to escape the mundane and offers us a chance to follow our curiosities down unknown roads to hopefully arrive at places of awe. It is for that reason that traveling evokes images of far and exotic locales that challenge our paradigms in landscapes, or cultures. <a name='more'></a><br />
But traveling is more about opening our eyes than simply being a tourist in another place. A traveler is a curious explorer. And that doesn't mean that you have to go somewhere far - you can explore your own hometown. While it is not as romantic of an idea, it is still worth it! <br />
<br />
Unless you are a self-employed traveler or have a job that allows you to travel regularly, the opportunity to travel isn't always there. But that doesn't mean that you have to stop being a traveler. <br />
Chances are that you don't even know your area that well. Sure, you live, study, and/or work there, but have you explored it? Pretend you have moved into your area in a study abroad experience and reclaim the charm of novelty of your hometown. Your own hometown is probably a travel destination for other people who come to appreciate the sites and views that you now take for granted.<br />
<br />
Look up the top ten things to do in your area or look it up on tripadvisor. Book a tour or visit some of your hometown's biggest attractions. Or you could spend time in some of the smaller attractions like local museums, small downtown areas and smaller parks. Get to know the locals and you will have a place that you can visit often.<br />
<br />
Personally, I enjoy going to local sites to practice my photography. Not only can you easily go back to the site to get a shot, but you can also come back to the same spot over time and notice the differences. Plus, since I know my area, I have a greater understanding of it and I can practice taking photographs that capture the essence of my hometown.<br />
<br />
Another thing you can do is take a day trip or a weekend trip to someplace nearby. That way you can still experience the feeling of being anonymous in another place only a few hours away from home. <br />
<br />
Exploring your own hometown let's stay curious, stave off the mundane and train your eyes to see the novelty and awe in everything. And the best part is, that it's not hard to go back for a visit. </span> </div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixfeXJkw0VGsdy67vbfXVswWvB3a6Bfp6zybLAxqVQ2nfoO459Cmicg2s81_-iVNBrvcp3wTrFfA3TLV8fqWr5mjS4fHxRYHmFmr7vyLGQYgpeLSfxY7qn78_A8bU0OjwQ3_Nv7k23J2U/s1600/Necklace+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixfeXJkw0VGsdy67vbfXVswWvB3a6Bfp6zybLAxqVQ2nfoO459Cmicg2s81_-iVNBrvcp3wTrFfA3TLV8fqWr5mjS4fHxRYHmFmr7vyLGQYgpeLSfxY7qn78_A8bU0OjwQ3_Nv7k23J2U/s640/Necklace+7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I love wearing these simple necklaces. They provide a small pop of color but still remain simple and versatile. They do, however, require a little bit more planning than other necklaces, so make sure you have a ruler or tape measure handy!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
For this DIY, you will need:<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Beads</li>
<li>Wire or eyepins</li>
<li>Chain</li>
<li>Round-nose pliers/Wire cutters</li>
<li>Clasp</li>
<li>Tape measure/ruler</li>
</ul>
<div>
1. Start by making your beaded sections. Cut out a piece of wire (or use an eyepin) using your wire cutters, and using round-nosed pliers make a loop at one end. String on your bead and complete the section by making another loop at the end. Make sure that they are roughly the same length or use the same number of beads. For the Red Coral Necklace, each beaded section was about .5 inches long.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbFPsLOb44NH3zMv6_anRoKicgZEFgZXlcX7bKMiG0bthTi9W1Pa9n99-S0MlO5fcpAxmuweksimeuYd4Xe8MeTo6T_7N3m6TEPArHEIw1xxnjWiv4yJqRpAUFUIhtC1JWJQ7Ix8FhmPw/s1600/DIY+Handpiece+Collage+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbFPsLOb44NH3zMv6_anRoKicgZEFgZXlcX7bKMiG0bthTi9W1Pa9n99-S0MlO5fcpAxmuweksimeuYd4Xe8MeTo6T_7N3m6TEPArHEIw1xxnjWiv4yJqRpAUFUIhtC1JWJQ7Ix8FhmPw/s640/DIY+Handpiece+Collage+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
2. Next cut out your pieces of chain.<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>For the Red Coral Necklace, you will need 6 pieces of chain that are 2.5 inches long and one piece of chain that is 6 inches long.</li>
<li>For the Gold Chain Necklace, you will need 2 pieces of chain that are 2.5 inches long and 2 pieces of chain that are 3.5 inches long</li>
<li>For the Turquoise Bead Necklace, you will need 2 pieces of chain that are 2.25 inches long and 2 pieces of chain that are 3.5 inches long</li>
</ul>
<div>
3. Now simply attach your sections of chain, beaded sections, and clasps. For the Red Coral Necklace, since it was so long, I opted not to add a clasp.</div>
<div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I drink a lot of water. I don't even leave the house without
my water bottle (and a snack! I am a real life Mary Poppins. I also carry a book
and a notebook) and I can't work without a tall glass of ice cold water. Of
course, in the excitement of traveling, it can get a little harder to keep
track of your water intake/hydration status. Being a little thirsty when you
are out and about exploring isn't usually more than an annoyance that can be
quickly taken care of, but there are a few instances when you should definitely
focus on your water consumption. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<a name='more'></a>The first place is when you are traveling via airplane.
Airplane cabins have lower humidity which makes you more dehydrated than normal
so it's important to keep taking those waters the air hostesses offer you.
Being dehydrated also makes you tired, so drink water and make sure you are
bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when you arrive at your destination!<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The other time you should really be aware of your water
intake is when you are hiking or are visiting someplace really hot/desert.<span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/hike-smart.htm" target="_blank"> The National Park Service</a> </span>states that for every hour you are hiking in the sun, you
lose about .5 to 1 quart of fluids. Dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion.
Another thing to keep in mind is that when you are sweating, you lose
electrolytes. Drinking too much water and not getting enough electrolytes can
lead to Hyponatremia (water intoxication) and it can be serious. So along with
the water, it is also essential to eat salty snacks or drink an electrolyte
drink. You can read more <a href="http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/hike-smart.htm" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">here.</span></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Usually when I am traveling, I like to buy a pack of plastic
water bottles and at least 2 large jugs of water from any supermarket as soon
as I arrive. Just store them in the back of your car or in your hotel room and
then fill them up in the morning. That way I always know that I have water
nearby and I am not buying a bottle of water or paying for hotel water every
time I get thirsty. Or you can just take an empty water bottle with you. I just
like having the security of multiple water bottles if I finish one. </div>

Remember that travel tip post in which I lauded the benefits
of having a big breakfast during a trip. Yes, <a href="http://facadesandnuances.blogspot.com/2015/04/travel-tip-eat-big-breakfast.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">this one.</span></a><span style="color: blue;"> </span>I would now like to
amend that. Know yourself and your weaknesses and limitations and plan
accordingly. For me, that means eat a lot, get some caffeine, and realize that
you come from a flat place at sea level. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Let me back up. I recently took a trip to Arizona/Utah and
had an absolutely wonderful time and I cannot wait to share pictures, tips, and
stories with you guys! But it has been awhile since I have been on such a
physically taxing vacation, so I was a little out of practice. On my first day,
I had a wonderful and large breakfast (omelets, hash browns, the works...). But
in my excitement for seeing the Grand Canyon, we bypassed lunch. Halfway
through one of the trails, most likely due to a plethora of reasons ( lack of
food, no caffeine consumption, the cold) I got a massive migraine. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Here is the thing. I normally drink a lot of chai (which is
difficult to make when you are on a trip), snack a lot, and eat early lunches.
Plus, I am not accustomed to the cold (the Grand Canyon was doing this thing
when it kept threatening to rain and would get really windy). I tried to remedy
my migraine with an Advil, and some snacks. I even downed an entire ice cream
in the cold and I don't even like ice cream.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I learned my lesson.
Determined not to feel sick for the rest of the trip, I downed down
bitter hotel coffee in the morning and kept eating enormous breakfasts. Since
stops in Arizona and Utah are far and I don't like overspending on food, I
would buy a sandwich from Subway in the morning (with copious amounts of
guacamole) and eat my soggy sandwich later when I was hungry. And it worked! </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
This also applies to physical limitations as well. I am from
Florida which is flat and at sea level; the terrain is completely the opposite
of Arizona and Utah. So, I didn't try to be too over adventurous and tackle the
harder hikes. Did I miss out on some views? Probably. But who says I can't go
back when I am in better shape to tackle it?
All of the parks I went to talked about the dangers of overexertion and
dehydration. Also, on a related note, don't get so close to the edge - is that
picture really worth it? Don't do anything silly or risky for a photo. I saw a
woman twist her ankle at Horseshoe Bend. Be smart, people. Please. Know thyself
and understand that Nature is a force to be reckoned with. </div>

It's time for the April 2015 book reviews! Every month, I
share what books I read during the previous month and give my opinions on them.
If you would like to see any of the previous reviews, follow the link <a href="http://facadesandnuances.blogspot.com/search/label/books" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">here</span></a>. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Though I started many books last month, I only managed to
finish reading three. Its always a little surprising when some incredibly
famous books are not your cup of tea. That being said, I did read some great
books this month.</div>

name, so when I saw that my library had this ebook, I decided to give her a
chance. She certainly lives up to the hype. The premise is a little difficult
to describe, but it centers on a group of eccentric individuals that study the
Greek Classics in a very exclusive class in college and strive to live in the
modern world as Greeks. I know that sounds bland, but I promise you it's not.
The characters are smug yet riveting and the more they immerse themselves in
the Classics they start crossing the lines of morality. I am not well versed in
the Classics, but even I could tell that Donna Tartt had interwoven aspects of the Classics into the
characters and the plot. I also loved the romantic tone that the novel
maintained throughout the novel. In short, Donna Tartt is a genius and I can't
wait to read her other books.<br />

attention recently and for a good reason. It's short fast-paced thriller with
an odd yet captivating premise. Our main character Rachel takes the same train
every morning and has started to recognize a couple in one of the homes that
she passes by. But one day, when it is reported that the wife is missing,
Rachel is sure that she has information that can help. Told through multiple
points of view, Paula Hawkins does a fantastic job of presenting flawed characters
that are frustrating yet relatable. Though the ending was slightly
disappointing for me, I still enjoyed it. </div>

recommended. I was a little disappointed that it didn't offer any life advice,
but I found it to be an enjoyable and fast-paced read. Is it weird that at times she sounded like my
best friend? To be honest, I don't really remember anything specific about it
except that it put me in a good mood. Mindy Kaling is incredibly determined,
sweet, and optimistic and this book is great for when you are feeling down.</div>

Life throws you curve balls and sometimes that happens when
you are traveling.</div>
<a name='more'></a> Even if you have planned the perfect itinerary to see all of
the wondrous sights a destination has to offer, things will not go to plan.
This isn't a bad thing. Sure, it might be because you got lost, or have a flat
tire. It can also be due to spending more time than planned at a certain
attraction because you love it so much. Either way, if you travel like me and
want to see as much as you can, you will be pressed for time. It is for that
reason, that I always make sure I have a big breakfast before I start my
day. <br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A good breakfast will give you a good energy boost so you
can hit the ground running, but having a big breakfast will keep your energy up
throughout the day even if you don't get a chance to eat lunch. There is no fun
in a vacation in which you are hungry, irritated, and miserable. Also, starting
a car trip without eating breakfast and thinking you will eat when you get
there is also a bad idea.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Trust me, I know from experience. When I was visiting India,
I anticipated that our drive from New Delhi to Jaipur would take about 4 hours
in the morning. So, I decided to skip breakfast at 4 a.m. Unfortunately, I
didn't reach Jaipur until about 1 in the afternoon and ended up having a very
expensive lunch just because I was starving and irritated.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
Of course, taking snacks is also a good idea - but having a
proper breakfast in the morning especially one in a different country is a good
way to start the day. It's for the reason I always try to stay in hotels that
offer breakfast (and if it's free, that's even better!). It also ends up being
cheaper. Hotels usually offer a buffet so you can eat as much as you want, but
if you want a big breakfast from a fast food restaurant - you will end up spending a lot of money.</div>

Do you remember those old map atlases? The ones that pages
upon pages of maps of every state that you would place on the hood of your car
as you tried to figure out your route? Despite the ease that GPS provides
(except when it tells you to drive into the ocean) and apps like Waze (which is
a lifesaver) I still like to use maps.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Before you scoff, hear me out (even though this might be due
to the fact that I am an old lady in the body of a young one). Using actual
tangible maps makes planning and traveling easier. Maps are reliable, will work
despite the lack of wifi, don't make you have to zoom in and out on your phone
to figure out where you are going, and don't die on you in the middle of nowhere.
Plus, they work in all countries unlike some forms of GPS (of course, having
updated maps is necessary but once again that is a story for another time). </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I like to see where I am going - even when I use GPS (it's
how I roll). So when I am planning a trip, I like to see where all the
attractions and sites are in relation to each other. Sites like tripadvisor don't really help in
that department. Sure, they mark where the attractions are, but then if the
attractions and sites are close to each other it just becomes a jumble. And
then you have to zoom in and out to get a better look of street names. And it's more fun to open your map and loudly announce
you are a tourist so locals can help you (except when you are somewhere you
don't want to announce that you are an easy target for pickpocketers. In that
case, you don't want to use your phone either. Slip into a cafe and check
there.).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Usually, I try to get a guidebook (AAA tends to have good
ones) or just Google maps of the area for one that has attractions listed. The
U.S. National Park Service always has fantastic maps and guides for the parks
so I always like to print those out. And of course, you can always pick up maps
from your hotel or the airport to supplement all of the maps you already printed
out while planning. </div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, if anyone does know of a good app that does help give a
nice overview, isn't a pain to use, and operates without wifi - please let me
know!</div>

<br />
I read some amazing books this March and I think I am starting to discover that I enjoy contemporary and historical fiction novels - but I do enjoy the occasional thriller. Here are the books that I liked or disliked in the month of March.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<b><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18775306-henna-house?from_search=true&search_exp_group=group_b" target="_blank"><u>Henna House by Nomi Eve</u></a></b><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
I actually read this book awhile ago, but I forgot to
include it in my February Book Reviews. It took me awhile to get through this
book since every time I read it, I was also learning. The book follows the life
of Adela, a Yemenite Jew, from her childhood in Yemen in the 1920s to her eventual arrival in Israel after World War II. I was obviously
drawn to this book based on the title - I love henna and a book about Henna? Of
course! I didn't know about the history of Yemen during this time period and this book taught me a lot. Nomi Eve did her research. The descriptions of henna and it's relation to the experience of the
women was beautifully depicted. I feel like I need
to reread this book to fully appreciate its
complexity. When I read it, I was more focused on understanding it and finding out what happened. On that same
note, I was a little disappointed with the end. The premise and the build-up
had lead me to believe something bigger would happen. Still, it was a good read.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>The verdict: Read it
and learn about the world. And take time to appreciate the writing while
sipping on a cup of tea.<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><u><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15796700-americanah?from_search=true&search_exp_group=group_a" target="_blank">Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie</a></u></b><br />
I wanted to like this book and I loved it. And yes, this is
author whose TED talk was featured in Beyonce's "Flawless". The novel
follows the stories of two secondary school sweethearts - Ifelemu as she
travels from Nigeria to the United States, and then decided to return to Nigeria and Obinze as he tries to live as an undocumented
immigrant and London and how he returns years earlier. Now, I normally don't like
love stories - they bore me. But Adiche is a masterful storyteller - so much so
that I actually tried to read a romance after reading this (and then got bored
so I thankfully gave up on that idea).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But this is not only a love story - this is a story about
being black in America as told through the eyes of an African woman who had never even thought of herself as black. It is also a story of the immigrant
experience and surviving. This novel also brilliantly tackles race politics in
America head-on and it's refreshing and informative. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
In terms of pacing, the novel is a little slow in the
beginning but it quickly picks up on its rhythm a few chapters in. And that is
when I couldn't put it down. </div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>The verdict: Highly
recommended - one of the best books I've ever read. Read it anywhere you can.<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><u><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5983057-the-swan-thieves?ac=1" target="_blank">The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova</a></u><o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The word that comes to mind when trying to describe this
book is lovely.The premise of this novel is simple as it follows psychiatrist
Andrew Marlowe goes above and beyond to understand why his patient, Robert
Oliver, a renowned painter, attacked a painting in the National Gallery of Art. But
in doing so, it weaves back and forth into the past and present, through
multiples perspectives, and the beautiful world of art and artists. This is a
fairly large book and it is also moves quite slowly. I have seen reviews in
which people have expressed frustration that nothing happens in the book. This
isn't a thriller - it's a mystery that unfolds slowly, layer by layer. The

The idea is intriguing. Primatologist Jenny Lowe is forced
to flee from the Congo due to a civil war which leaves another scientist dead
and his daughter Lucy orphaned. Jenny ends up adopting Lucy only to find out
that she is the result of a scientific experiment and she is half-human and
half-bonobo. The premise is interesting, seems fairly scientifically sound in
theory, and raises many moral questions. But the novel was so simplified. Every
interaction only functioned to emphasize Lucy's bonobo or human characteristics. The opposition and the
"bad guys" of the story were so cliché. I just couldn't connect with
any of the characters. I wouldn't have finished this book, but it was the only
thing I had with me one day and so I read/skimmed it.</div>

Oh, this book was good. I haven't seen the movie but I
figured that with all the hype it was probably overrated. But my best friend
insisted that I read it and I am so glad I did. and so I read it. The book was gripping and fascinating and I finished it in two days.
The story begins on Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary when Amy
goes missing. As the media, police, and people in their town start
investigating these odd circumstances, things start getting suspicious. The characters are incredibly messed up, but Gillian Flynn is able to not only
make you relate to these characters, but also care for them. I honestly don't know how she does it. I think
the best part of the novel is that it never loses that tone from beginning to
end. Even the ending is ambiguous and ominous as the book was. </div>

I had the chance to participate in the <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://localadventurer.com/lovely-letters-making-international-pen-friends/" target="_blank">Lovely Letters Snail Mail Exchange</a></span> this month which is hosted every month by the <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://localadventurer.com/" target="_blank">LocalAdventurer </a></span>blog. The premise is simple - you are paired with another blogger, you get a chance to get to know them and then you send each other a package with some trinkets (with a limit of $7) and a Lovely Letter.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
My last exchange didn't go so well, but this time, I was paired with the Esther from the <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://localadventurer.com/" target="_blank">LocalAdventurer</a></span> blog. Make sure that you check it out. Local Adventurer specializes in travel posts, fantastic travel advice, and recipes! I had a fantastic time talking to her. We talked about travel, jewelry, style, and food!<br />
<br />
This month's theme was Green and I completely failed at it. I tried to make up for it in my packaging.<br />
And of course, as a DIYer, I had to make something. So after creepily asking for her wrist measurement, I made her a set of stretchy bracelets (like the ones I made <a href="http://facadesandnuances.blogspot.com/2014/09/diy-how-to-make-your-basic-stretch.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">here</span></a>) and a necklace. I also sent a pair of bangles from India in honor of our shared interest in traveling and a small Paint-By-Numbers set to inspire her to paint!<br />

Sometimes I am incredibly motivated and decide that I am going to write a

writing. For the last couple of months, I have tried to be more consistent with
my writing and improve my relationship with my writing muse and actually
complete some stories. I started with NaNoWriMo (National Writing Month) and

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
About a week ago, I published a different kind of post
titled "<a href="http://facadesandnuances.blogspot.com/2015/03/travel-tips-trust-locals.html" target="_blank">Travel Tip: Trust the locals"</a>. I wrote it on a whim because I
had procrastinated and didn't have anything to post. But since then, I have
decided that I liked the post and I liked sharing my travel stories, and for
that reason I have decided to continue to write similar posts as a new series
on the blog.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p> </o:p>I also think it deserves a proper introduction. I am not
your hardened traveler back from trekking Mount Everest, but I love traveling
and I have had my share of adventures. I have picked up on the necessities. And
I have made mistakes that while stressful at the time, now provide for some
good stories. So stick around, for some stories, tips, and maybe some new
perspectives.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, onward to today's tip of investing in good shoes.
Before I start, it is important to understand where I am coming from. For the most part, I am either wearing flip-flops, sandals, or going barefoot.
While I love my sandals, they aren't the kind of sturdy shoes one needs when
going on a trip.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So when I was packing for a trip to UK, I had a few options
- A pair of gray sneakers that were a little old, a brand new pair of Sperry's
(boat shoes), and brightly colored running shoes. I opted for the gray sneakers
and the boat shoes thinking that they
would not only match my outfits ( I was going to the UK! I wanted to make sure
I got some good pictures!) but would provide my feet with adequate support.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I was wrong. I was so wrong. After wearing my gray sneakers
for half a day, I was hobbling. I hadn't worn them in awhile so I had forgotten
that they weren't just old - they were completely worn down. The next day, I switched to my Sperry's but
the damage was done. My feet were swollen and stayed swollen for the rest of
the trip. I took off my shoes when I could, and tried to walk on grass, but many of
the sites in the UK are historic and generally frown on non-shoe wearing tourists. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Of course, the saga doesn't end there. In Scotland, I
decided to go hiking up a mountain/hill completely forgetting that I was
wearing boat shoes with no traction. I
ended up holding everyone's hand on my way down. Did I mention that I also had
a fever? That was not a fun experience but the views were worth it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Invest in good shoes. Invest in proper shoes that give you
traction because you never know when everyone decides it's a good idea to go
hiking. And if you don't have time to invest in shoes, just take those fluorescent
running ones.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>

<a name='more'></a>The materials needed for the tutorial are pretty basic. You can walk into Michael's and get a pack that has headpins, eyepins, earring hooks, clasps, and jump rings. You will need pliers and a wire cutter, but those are fairly attainable.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
For this DIY, you will need:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik-xJ9TmevuBKDkzzO_BaDMEfGJybieQbB0Qup2e3qadPpYohz0txqFNZXkaI7bM76GYE0XxURKgkaNXkdbRtkY986v_42wAenGMQiOAI4Jffq4Y4FTV8IgDU7tGSamNyvYgOo0Sx9gfA/s1600/Easy+Earrings+19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik-xJ9TmevuBKDkzzO_BaDMEfGJybieQbB0Qup2e3qadPpYohz0txqFNZXkaI7bM76GYE0XxURKgkaNXkdbRtkY986v_42wAenGMQiOAI4Jffq4Y4FTV8IgDU7tGSamNyvYgOo0Sx9gfA/s1600/Easy+Earrings+19.jpg" height="452" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To make the blue earring, you will need a headpin, assorted beads, and an earring hook.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfYy7CuYXGmsNYMzNFlaWXuxdAvdMf-w1VuYVU-D1st1STYJXsYgG8KU2nrUenPm4fSAhOhJmnoTSvjkvgiCN8TxnhIVVfgJ2ext-ltWCIaDMO1zc300aAMnLy9zq8tWd2HOydLCSeh88/s1600/Easy+Earrings+24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfYy7CuYXGmsNYMzNFlaWXuxdAvdMf-w1VuYVU-D1st1STYJXsYgG8KU2nrUenPm4fSAhOhJmnoTSvjkvgiCN8TxnhIVVfgJ2ext-ltWCIaDMO1zc300aAMnLy9zq8tWd2HOydLCSeh88/s1600/Easy+Earrings+24.jpg" height="160" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Begin by stringing the beads of your choice on the headpins</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. You will now need to make a loop at the end of the headpin to attach the earring hook. Cut off some excess wire from the headpin. Leave about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Place the tip of your pliers at the end of the wire and turn the wire towards you, making a loop. Basically, the wire should wrap the end of the tip of the pliers. Don't close the loop.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Attach your earring hook and close the loop with your pliers by putting the opening in between the plier "jaws" and press gently.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make the coin earring, you will need an eye pin, assorted beads, and an earring hook.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEippvjsnEIynzrPpFwwMmrwqDYxIRjusTsDpqL0EnDy60xfFudjkL2Ga-k4LOCxY7S-F77MPfIXsMykcIowx8dB7vUHrD68_ppGVjpRU3VjzKSqVbrRWSBPftBoyrx6UPUYC9DuJM462YU/s1600/Easy+Earrings+22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEippvjsnEIynzrPpFwwMmrwqDYxIRjusTsDpqL0EnDy60xfFudjkL2Ga-k4LOCxY7S-F77MPfIXsMykcIowx8dB7vUHrD68_ppGVjpRU3VjzKSqVbrRWSBPftBoyrx6UPUYC9DuJM462YU/s1600/Easy+Earrings+22.jpg" height="212" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
1. Open the loop of your eyepin. Most eyepins loops are completely closed</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2. Attach the coin or bead of your choice into the loop and close it by putting the opening in between the plier "jaws" and pressing gently.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3. String on the rest of your beads.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKt8tFqVQ_EooJZ3Kx3Q2T5lE74w7f7jsl8YC7TSPnhP1-kKBqB2B661rHp17B7bIyTOiil-qzyA1I9YeKpEJ6E1TLp7MvQ02-wNwuRf18rpZJjVzslMx0zsK4168pqaP1bzRMeC9kw14/s1600/Easy+Earrings+25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKt8tFqVQ_EooJZ3Kx3Q2T5lE74w7f7jsl8YC7TSPnhP1-kKBqB2B661rHp17B7bIyTOiil-qzyA1I9YeKpEJ6E1TLp7MvQ02-wNwuRf18rpZJjVzslMx0zsK4168pqaP1bzRMeC9kw14/s1600/Easy+Earrings+25.jpg" height="212" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
4. Cut off the excess wire. Leave 1/2 to 3/4th of an inch<br />
<br />
5. Make a loop at the end and add your earring hook as shown (see steps 3 and 4 for the blue headpin earrings above)<br />
<br />
And that's it! Wear your handmade earrings with pride!</div>

I had a fantastic time at one of the smaller beaches near Clearwater Beach a few weeks ago. Though the water was freezing, the day was sunny with slightly cool winds. Thought I would share this beautiful day with a few pictures!<br />

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
This is my hundredth post on the blog. How incredibly crazy
is that? I wrote and published 100 posts and so to celebrate I decided to post
some slightly different today!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<a name='more'></a> I love traveling. I have this insatiable wanderlust and when
I travel, I pack my itinerary from early morning to late at night. I want to
see everything a destination has to offer. ( I honestly don't understand hotel
getaways or hotel staycations. You are in a different place/town/country! Why
would you want to stay inside a hotel?! You are missing out! I DON'T GET IT.
But that's a post for later.)<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There are a plethora of articles and books about filled with
travel tips which typically tackle the subject of how to pack your bag (which
is something I have yet to figure out) but I decided to also dole out my own
brand of advice on the subject of traveling. And my first piece of advice is to
trust the locals. Ask them questions. And listen. I have rarely met any local
of any locale that was rude, unhelpful, or rebuffed me when I asked for help or
usually directions. Plus locals aren't trying to sell you something, so you can
usually assume their advice is genuine (Disclaimer: Be smart. Don't offer unnecessary
information, stay vigilant, and don't tell people where you are staying and
don't go to isolated places alone!)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This seems like common sense, but sometimes when you neurotically
when you plan your trip to the last detail, you assume that you know where you
are going and what you are doing. But there is always a very good chance that
you will get stuck in an overpriced tourist trap or are totally lost. Now if you are somewhere like a National Park, asking a ranger is obvious. But it's
always a good idea to ask the hotel manager or the concierge for advice. Before
you go out for the day, if you aren't with a tour, ask them for the best directions
to your destinations for the day and their opinions on what to see.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Not following my own advice meant that during my trip to
Costa Rica, we ended up in San Juan when we were trying to get to Arenal.
Thankfully we met someone who was happy to give us directions and we learned
our lesson. We spent the rest of trip, driving, stopping on the side of the
road by a local, pointing in the direction
we were going and asking "Arenal?" and only moving forward if we got
a "Si!".</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Gas station owners are usually helpful when you are on the
road (I did come across a man who didn't know where Shakespeare's house was
despite the fact that he was in Stratford, but a customer was happy to help us).
Asking teenagers and kids doesn't usually work out because it usually ends up
being a very long "uhhh" or them thinking for a long time which is
then followed by a shrug or a shy "I don't know". If you are lucky, a
mom will come and be happy to help. Middle-aged individuals are usually your
best bet for directions and suggestions.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And of course, it's important to be wary of your surroundings
and take the locals advice to avoid certain areas no matter what your GPS tells
you. Be wary and flexible about your plans. But also take the advice of a local
with a grain of salt. If the locals strongly advise to go somewhere, consider
it - but only after you ask another or multiple locals. When I was visiting in
Jaipur, literally every Rickshaw driver kept recommending that we go to a local
marketplace for souvenirs for fantastic deals. We started on our way, but then
decided to ask someone else (that wasn't a rickshaw driver) about the market.
He told us that we would only be getting bad quality cheap stuff and it was better if we
spent our time and money elsewhere. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Traveling is all about opening your eyes to the world and but it's also about connecting with people. So don't be afraid to ask the locals for
advice (Disclaimer once again: Be careful and don't tell them your life story and where you are
staying, etc.) and recommendations. You will find that most people are happy to
help and share their knowledge about their home. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

We live in a fantastic age where there is literally an app for everything and at times, it can be a little overwhelming. Someone recommends an app, you download it, promptly forget about it, and it eats up more space on your phone than you need to. That being said, I do love finding new and interesting apps. Here are some of my favorites (without the obvious Facebook and Instagram apps). <a name='more'></a><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://vsco.co/vscocam" target="_blank">VSCOcam</a></span> - If you follow me on Instagram and notice my hashtags, you know that I adore this app. And honestly, what's not to love? This photo-editing app let's you edit your photo in any way you want - straighten, crop, highlight, shadows, etc. If you want to take a picture on the app itself, it helps you take a straight picture, locks in a white balance, lets you control your shutter speed and exposure, and basically makes sure any and every photo you take is a masterpiece. And if it isn't, well, you have a plethora of wonderfully subtle filters to choose from. </div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
2. <u><span style="color: blue;"><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hyperlapse-from-instagram/id740146917?mt=8" target="_blank">Hyperlapse from Instagram</a></span></u> - Hyperlapse is a fun app. Basically, it allows you to make time lapse videos (You can see one on my Instagram <span style="color: blue;"><a href="https://instagram.com/facadesandnuances/p/0HApjwqfSd/" target="_blank">here</a></span>!). Simply record in whatever direction you wish, record, and then adjust the speed. The only downside to this app is once you save it, you can't adjust the speed again. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. <u><span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://app.overdrive.com/" target="_blank">Overdrive</a></span></u> - I am surprised I don't hear more about this app because its basically a goldmine for ebooks, videobooks, and music and where I get all of my ebooks from. Basically it's a platform where you can access your local library's digital collection. Just add a library, type in your library card, and you have access to a plethora of content. You can check out multiple ebooks and audiobooksfor about 1 to 2 weeks (videos are for 7 days), renew if anyone hasn't put it on hold, and put items on hold. Plus, if you download items on your Overdrive app, you don't have to worry about returning the items and they are easily accessible on your Bookshelf. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. <u><span style="color: blue;"><a href="https://getpocket.com/" target="_blank">Pocket</a></span></u> - This one is an oldie but a goodie. Pocket allows you to save anything from the Internet so you can read it later. Plus, it syncs across all devices and you can view whatever you saved even when you are offline. You can add tags to keep track of everything you have saved and can send articles to friends. It's basically how you wish bookmarks worked.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5.<span style="color: blue;"><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flat-tomato-time-management/id719462746?mt=8" target="_blank"> <u>Flat Tomato</u> </a></span>- This app is a free pomodoro app. There are a plethora of different ones out there but I like it because it's free and sticks with the original tomato motif. The pomodoro technique is a productivity method (read more about it <a href="http://pomodorotechnique.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">here</span></a>). Basically, when you want to complete a task, you break it into 25 minute spurts of activity called pomdoros. At the end of each pomodoro, you take a 5 minute break and after four pomodoros you take a longer half an hour break. I use this method to help regain some semblance of control when I am overwhelmed and this app works well enough with its timer! </div>

It's been awhile that I have posted a DIY so I thought I would share a bracelet DIY for a bracelet that I have been making for a few years. It's fairly easy but I love how simple and elegant it looks when it's worn!<br />
<br />
And I just realized that this is the second time I have used this amethyst as a prop and I should probably invest in some other props.<br />

Cut two pieces of wire that are about 3 to 4 inches longer than the length of your wrist. Thread a crimp bead and a jump ring through both of the wires as shown above. Pass the wires over the jump ring and through the crimp bead at one end of the wires. Secure the crimp bead by pressing down on it with your pliers.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make things easier, string on your larger bead first. It's easier to string four pieces of wire through one large bead. Cut off the excess from the smaller wires. Then string on your smaller beads on the two wires. Try to use the smallest beads near the larger beads so they fit more snugly and make that oval shape ( trust me this makes sense when you are making it). Continue making your pattern until you get to the end. Then string a crimp bead and your jump ring as before, pass the strings through the crimp bead and the large bead and secure. Cut off the excess wire, attack your clasp, and you are done!</div>

<br />
On an uncharacteristically cold day for Florida, my best friend and I decided to drive over to Tarpon Springs. Tarpon Springs is located on the west coast of Florida and was once known as the "Sponge Capital of the World" in the first half of the 1900s.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The sponge docks of Tarpon Springs started in 1890 when it was realized that sponging in the local waters could be profitable. Experienced divers from Greece were brought in and the community grew. Unfortunately, in 1946, a red algae bloom wiped out the sponges and by the time they recovered, synthetic sponges were cheaper.<br />
<br />
The community still has a small sponge industry and Greek heritage is very much alive in the docks' museum, shops, and restaurants. We spent most of the day meandering through its shops and stuffing ourselves with delicious Greek food while admiring the murals about Greece and Tarpon Springs.<br />
<br />
The shops offered all types of different sponges - they were literally everywhere. Another thing that Tarpon Springs sells a lot of is - soap. Shops were filled with soaps made of olive oil, goat's milk, and shea and they all smelled of different heavenly scents. I ended up buying a goat's milk soap that smelled like lemongrass with a sponge attached.<br />

<br />
It's Dr. Seuss's birthday! He was a man of creative whims and so in his honor, I feel it's appropriate to share five websites/communities that will expand your creative horizons.<br />
<br />
Jewelry making is my go-to creative outlet. I enjoy working with my hands and creating wearable pieces of art. But that does not mean that I limit myself to it. Creativity is a muscle and working it in different ways and through different mediums can help inspire you and yield more fantastic and beautiful creations. Here are some ways to exercise your creative mind:<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><b style="font-weight: bold;"><u><a href="http://www.lifecapturedinc.com/blog/life-captured-project-4" target="_blank">Life: Captured Inc.'s #lifecapturedproject</a></u> for journaling and photography: </b>Life: Captured Inc. focuses on preserving memories and documenting one's life. They recently started the #lifecapturedproject in which they post a list of journaling/photography prompts for each month. Journaling has proven benefits (here is a great <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://lifehacker.com/why-you-should-keep-a-journal-and-how-to-start-yours-1547057185" target="_blank">article</a> </span>from lifehacker to convince you), it can help you make sense of your life so you can take control of it (here is another <a href="http://www.bustle.com/articles/62005-5-ways-to-live-like-youre-the-star-of-your-own-tv-show-because-lifes-too" target="_blank">article</a> about how you should live like you are the star of your show), and it is a fantastic way to get back into writing.</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><b style="font-weight: bold;"><u><a href="http://moleskinemadness.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">March Moleskine Madness </a></u>for journaling and art:</b><b> </b>This is a month long challenge that is not restricted to art or moleskines. A list of prompts are posted everyday and you are free to choose one, a few, or none. You can then submit your creations onto the tumblr to be featured. To win, you only need 25 entries and you can draw more than one entry a day. This is a great way to work on your artistic skills and be a part of a community.</li>
</ul>
<div style="font-weight: bold;">
<br /></div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><b style="font-weight: bold;"><u><a href="http://yourshot.nationalgeographic.com/assignments/world-turns/" target="_blank">National Geographic's Your shot</a></u> for photography: </b>Speaking of communities, National Geographic has a fantastic worldwide community of amateur and professional photographers. Not only can you submit your photos onto the forum where they will be viewed by other photographers, but you can also participate in their photo challenges which are a great way to master your photography skills and get creative. Plus, there is a plethora of tips on the site. At the moment, photographer Jim Richardson has challenged the community to photograph Transitions: As the World Turns which is open until March 15.</li>
</ul>
<div style="font-weight: bold;">
<br /></div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><b style="font-weight: bold;"><u><a href="http://www.writersdigest.com/prompts" target="_blank">Writer's Digest Weekly prompts</a></u> or <u><a href="http://www.writersdigest.com/writing-prompts" target="_blank">Writing Boot Camp </a></u>for creative writers:</b><b> </b>Maybe journaling isn't your thing but you still want to write. Every Tuesday, Writer's Digest posts a new creative writing prompt. Or if you want to go a little more hardcore, Writer's Digest also offers a free two week boot camp full of writing prompts. Plus, the website is filled with tips, tricks, and information on everything from getting started as a new writer to publishing.</li>
</ul>
<div style="font-weight: bold;">
<br /></div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><b style="font-weight: bold;"><a href="http://artprompts.org/">ArtPrompts.org</a> for everything:</b><b> </b>Maybe you don't want to journal or do a challenge. Maybe you don't like the creative writing prompts. ArtPrompts.org is a art prompts generator. Just click on a category like character, situation, etc. and it will give you a random prompt. Plus, you can refresh as many times as you like. The site is still a work in progress so some of the categories might have smaller libraries but it is still a fantastic resource for creatives!</li>
</ul>
<div>
Have you used any of these resources? Are you participating in any of them? Do you know any other sites for creatives? Let me know in the comments!</div>

<br />
I am back with some more reviews on the books that I read (and finished) during this month (You can check out January's Book Reviews <a href="http://facadesandnuances.blogspot.com/2015/01/january-2015-book-reviews.html#more" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">here</span></a>!). I had a good month and I liked most of the books that I read. Have you guys read any of these books? What did you think of them? Leave a comment below!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><u><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16099189-the-light-in-the-ruins?from_search=true" target="_blank">The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian</a><o:p></o:p></u></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I enjoy historical fiction and I read a lot of mystery books
when I was younger and this book was a perfect blend of both. The story
switches between two narratives and three points of view that are intertwined.
One narrative is from the eyes of Cristina Roseti towards the end of World War
2 as she watches her idyllic life in Italy change as Nazis show up interested
in some local ruins and begin to turn their home into their prison. The other
narrative is from the eyes of detective Serafina Bettini, about 10 years,
trying to determine who is killing off members of the Roseti family. The third
narrative is that of the killer.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What I loved about this was how information was given out
(well, for the most part). You learned information about the 1943 narrative in
the 1955 narrative before they are played out and the entire time, you are
unsure about who the killer is, what happened in 1943, and if Serafina will
catch the killer.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Overall, I enjoyed it with a couple caveats. For example, the
two close calls at the end seemed unnecessary and the eventual discovery of the
killer. The ending seemed a little rushed and the tone was less passionate as
the rest of the novel. I would, still, highly recommend this book!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Verdict: Read this
book to stay up late at night trying to figure out who the killer is while planning to move to Italy.<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><u><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12262741-wild?from_search=true" target="_blank">Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed</a><o:p></o:p></u></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I love hiking and after reading Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat Pray
Love, I was open to the idea of reading more books about women discovering
themselves in this era. It is for that reason that I truly respect Cheryl
Strayed's story and the fact that she shared it with the world.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I didn't like it as much. But before I start, here is the
premise - Cheryl Strayed's mother's death shakes her and her entire world as
her family and her marriage fall apart. Four years later, she decided to hike
the Pacific Crest Trail on her own without any major training.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I enjoyed her descriptions of the trail, I was pleasantly
surprised at how kind the people that she met were, and I was awed by her
willpower. But, I struggled to finish it. A lot of the book consisted of her focusing
on getting to the next stop where she could eat some food. Maybe that was the
point of the novel, but it just seemed repetitive to me. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Verdict: Read if you
really want to know what hiking is about but it wasn't my cup of tea<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><u><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17262100-the-lowland" target="_blank">The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri</a><o:p></o:p></u></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Oh, Jhumpa Lahiri. Her writing always leaves me a little sad
and awakens my own muse and makes me want to write. This book, explores the
idea and relationships of family starting with the relationship of two brothers.
While Udayan grows up to follow the
Naxalite movement in India, Subhash, goes to America to focus on science research. He returns to
India following his brother's death trying to right wrongs and work for a new
beginning with his brother's wife.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I liked <u>Unaccustomed Earth </u>more, but this novel is
still a great read as it weaves through the character's complex relationships and
explores the idea of family and belonging.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Verdict: Read for
some beautiful writing but remember that this story will stay with you for a
long time and will make you sad.<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><u><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2318271.The_Last_Lecture" target="_blank">The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch</a><o:p></o:p></u></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I can't believe it took me so long to get around to reading
this book. Randy Pausch was a computer science professor at Carnegie Melon when
he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and within a year was told that he only
had months to live. He was asked to give
a last lecture as a professor and he agreed. He titled it "Really Achieving
Your Childhood Dreams" was exactly about what the title implies. This book
talks about the process of writing the lecture along with the nuggets of wisdom
that he gives during the lecture.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In short, it's a guidebook on how to really live your life.
I cried, and laughed, and cried again while reading this while simultaneously
covering the entire book with little tabs on all of my favorite quotes (which
was essentially everything). I just felt myself wishing that I could have met
Randy Pausch. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Verdict: Highly
recommended for those who want a guidebook on how to live a truly wonderful
life.<o:p></o:p></b></div>
